WhereIs needs macOS 26 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon. To replay the built-in tour at any time, choose Help › WhereIs Tutorial.
Getting started
- Create a shelf: click + in the toolbar or press ⌃N, type a name and press Return.
- Add files: drag files or folders from Finder onto a shelf, or press ⌘O. A shelf keeps references, so your originals never move.
- Open and preview: double-click an item to open the original. Right-click it for Show in Finder, copy, compress, extract, pin and more.
- Organize: click a shelf’s label to rename it; drag the label to reorder or pin the shelf. Each shelf sorts by hand, name, last opened, or AI-created first.
- Find: press ⌘F to search every shelf.
Files and access
- A file was moved or renamed: WhereIs follows it automatically. If it was deleted or can’t be found, right-click it and choose Locate File….
- Shelves on another Mac: each Mac grants its own file access. For files in iCloud Drive, open Settings and choose Connect iCloud Drive Folder… once. Files that only exist on another Mac show as unavailable until you locate a copy on this Mac.
- Removing vs. deleting: removing an item from a shelf only removes the reference. Moving an item to the Trash always asks first.
iCloud sync
- Sign in to iCloud in System Settings on each Mac. WhereIs syncs shelves and references through your private iCloud; it doesn’t upload file contents.
- The sidebar shows the sync status and the last save time. To retry, open Settings and click Sync Now.
- If you sign in with a different Apple Account, sync pauses to keep the two libraries apart. Sign back in to the original account to resume. Your local library is never deleted.
WhereIs Pro and purchases
- Restore: choose WhereIs › WhereIs Pro…, or open Settings, and click Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought with.
- Cancel or change a subscription: open Settings › Membership… › Manage Subscription, or go to your subscriptions in the App Store. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid renewal.
- Lifetime and an existing subscription: buying Lifetime doesn’t cancel a subscription. Turn off its renewal in the App Store.
- Refunds: Apple handles App Store payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- If membership ends: nothing is deleted. Free limits (3 shelves, 20 items each) apply only to new additions.
Copy, move, ZIP and undo (WhereIs Pro)
- From a shelf’s ⋯ menu, copy or move every file into a new folder, or compress them into one ZIP. You always choose the destination first, and existing files are never replaced.
- Choose Undo Last Move… to restore a shelf’s last move, keeping the copies or moving the files back. Each shelf keeps its own undo, even after a restart.
- If a move was interrupted, choose Continue Interrupted Move… from the same menu. Finishing it never requires Pro.
Claude Code and Codex (WhereIs Pro)
- Choose an AI workspace location in Settings › AI Agents. Each shelf then gets its own folder there.
- Drag a shelf’s label onto Claude or Codex in the Dock, or use the shelf’s ⋯ menu › AI Workspace. The first time, approve the project in that app’s trust prompt.
- For the Codex app without the command line, Settings › AI Agents shows the MCP command and argument to add under Codex’s MCP servers.
- To hide the agent logos on files, turn off Show AI Badges on Files in Settings › AI Agents.
- Claude Code, Codex and their accounts are separate products; WhereIs doesn’t include AI credits.
